As the long summer days give way to crisp mornings and golden evenings, there’s no better time to visit the Shropshire Hills than in the autumn. Here at Mynd House Bed and Breakfast, we feel incredibly lucky to call this beautiful corner of the country our home – and we’d love to share it with you.
From September through to November, the landscape around us transforms into a rich tapestry of burnt orange, deep red, and golden yellow. The footpaths are quieter, the air is fresh, and there is a wonderful stillness to the hills which makes autumn a particularly good time to visit.
A Cosy Base in the Heart of the Shropshire Hills
We’ve been welcoming guests at Mynd House for many years now, and the most frequent thing we hear is how peaceful and stress-free it is here – especially in the autumn. Nestled in the charming Little Stretton village, under the Long Mynd, our B&B offers a warm and comfortable home-from-home from which to discover this lovely corner of the world.
Each of our seven en-suite bedrooms is individually decorated and furnished to provide a home-from-home atmosphere. Some have outlooks across to the hills – a treat when the morning haze rolls across the countryside, or when the trees are ablaze with autumn colour.
Following a day of exploration, many of our guests enjoy chilling out in the residents’ lounge, usually with a book, a cup of tea, or a glass of something stronger. On the colder winter nights, we light the fire, and it’s a pleasant place to unwind before heading out to one of the local pubs – within walking distance – for an evening meal.
Start the Day Right
We’re proud of our breakfasts at Mynd House. Each day, we provide a choice made up from good, locally sourced ingredients – from full Shropshire breakfasts to lighter choices like fresh fruit, yoghurt, and toast with homemade preserves. If you are going out, we’re happy to advise and even pack a packed lunch for you on request.
Why Visit Shropshire in Autumn?
We’ve always said that Shropshire is one of England’s best-kept secrets, and in autumn it’s particularly magical. Here are just a few of the reasons our guests come back time and again during this season:
Walking the Shropshire Hills – Straight from Our Door
One of the highlights of visiting Mynd House is having immediate access to some of the most stunning walks in the Shropshire Hills. From the front door, you can step out straight into the heart of the countryside – up the Long Mynd, across the Ashes Hollow valley, or over the ridge to Carding Mill Valley and onwards to novel destinations.
There’s something particularly enchanting about a stroll through these hills in autumn – the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, the blaze of colours on the trees, and the great, sweeping skies. You may want a gentle amble or a day’s good walk – don’t bother taking the car out – just pull your boots up and away you go.
Discover Historic Market Towns
We’re in just the right place for discovering some of Shropshire’s most appealing towns. Church Stretton is affectionately known as “Little Switzerland” because of its stunning vistas and ancient charm. It’s only a short drive to Ludlow, famous for its culinary scene and its beautiful medieval castle, or to Shrewsbury, with its half-timbered buildings, quirky shops, and picturesque river strolls.
Enjoy Cosy Pubs and Local Flavours
After a day’s walking on the hills, nothing is quite as good as a visit to a country pub. Our two good locals – The Ragleth Inn and The Green Dragon are both just a few minutes’ walk from the house and serve delicious, locally sourced food.
Castles, Heritage, and Scenic Drives
Should history be your passion, then Stokesay Castle is a real gem, providing a fascinating glimpse of the medieval world and set in picturesque countryside. Or if the moment strikes you for a drive into the scenery, then roads via Clun, Bishop’s Castle, and the Welsh borders are especially beautiful in autumn light.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
We always say that guests arrive as strangers and leave as friends – and never truer than during the autumn months when life slows down and there is time to unwind properly. Whatever brings you here, you’ll be warmly welcomed at Mynd House.
If you’re thinking of a countryside break this autumn, we’d be delighted to host you. You can book directly via our website www.myndhouse.co.uk or call us at 01694 722212 for availability and recommendations.
